 | There has been a serious and dramatic increase in prescription drug abuse in America, in part due to easy access to powerful prescription medications at home.
| Partnership for a Drug Free Americas's annual tracking of Prescription medication abuse by teens and young adults in the US revealed:
- 1 in 5 teens has abused a prescription in pain medication
- 1 in 5 teens report abusing prescription stimulants and tranquilizers
The National survey on Drug Use and Health identifies 4 types of Prescription medications that are commonly abused - pain relievers, stimulants, sedatives and tranquilizers.
Painkillers are the most common pharmaceuticals abused by teens, especially by younger teens. Stimulant abuse is more common among older teens and college students than younger teens. Girls are more likely to be current abusers of prescription medications than boys, according to the 2002 National Survey on Drug Use and Health
According to a 2005 National Survey on Drug Use and Health study, among persons aged 12 or older who used pain relievers non-medically in 2005, 59.8% reported that the source of the drug was from a friend or relative.
